Armenians in Cyprus
Cyprus has been home to an Armenian community for centuries, with roots going back to the Byzantine era, and its numbers grew significantly after refugees fleeing the Armenian Genocide settled on the island in the early 20th century.
A historic community
Armenians are one of Cyprus's officially recognized religious groups, alongside Maronites and Latins, with a representative elected to the House of Representatives — a rare form of formal recognition for a diaspora community.
Nicosia's Armenian quarter
The old town of Nicosia has a historic Armenian quarter, centered around the Virgin Mary Armenian Church (Sourp Asdvadzadzin), one of the oldest Armenian churches still in community use.
Community life today
Armenian schools, churches, and cultural organizations continue to serve the community across Cyprus, keeping language classes, religious services, and cultural events part of everyday life for Armenian Cypriots.
